Succession and Human Influence

In science we have been talking about the word "succession,"  and modeled the process using a model of a pond.  We found that over a period of four weeks the water evaporated, seedweed (elodia) died, grass and clover grew, and the whole pond turned into a completely different type of ecosystem.  It took four weeks for our ponds to transform.  What are your thoughts on a real pond?  Why are they around for tens, hundreds, even thousands of years?  Does succession take place everywhere eventually?  Those of you who went on the Superiorview Hike at Wolf Ridge can feel free to chime in here and let us know about the succession of Lake Superior.

On a similar thread; where do humans fit into succession?  We possess the ability to completely change an ecosystem in a short amount of time.  Is what we do concidered a natural act?  What would Prior Lake look like today if humans had not built houses on it and protected the shores from erosion?  Is the way that we interact with the environment concidered succession?  Hmmmm...

  1. Mr.B,
I think it would be considered succession.
Even though it was made by humans, we are mamals too.
Tools were used, but I think it was done by humans, not just the tools on their own.
    That's my opinion.

  8. Mr. B i think succession does take place everywhere whether humans intervene or not, a field was once a pond, a bowl in the ground could have been a lake, an island could have been formed by a volcano. Prior lake would probably still have looked different from its original state ,even if we didn't intervene, because of succession.

  34. hb5rm304 actually I don't think it would because it doesn't go through any steps a real pond would like the water slowly becoming shallower and the cattails and reeds planting themselves then dying decaying and making a marsh. It just goes straight from pond to marsh or field. It doesn't really take any steps at all!

  40. My thoughts about a real pond is that they transform slower than our small pond model and are around for years and years, unlike our pond model, because they are in nature where they can be part of the water cycle and they have organisms to benefit from. I think succession takes place everywhere there is a living organism because the living thing is what changes.
